power failure tips
No matter how good your energy provider is, when you live in a storm-prone state like Queensland, you have to expect the occasional power failure. If your home is faced with power failure, the energy institute offers the following tips:
- Turn off your stove, checking all items are off the hot plates. Also, turn off and unplug your refrigerator, television, computer and other electronic equipment.
- Ensure you have a torch in good working order, with spare batteries.
- Keep a battery-operated radio, with spare batteries, handy during major storms. Your local electricity supplier may provide regular updates on storm damage and power restoration to local radio stations. A battery-operated radio will help ensure you are able to receive this information if your electricity supply has been interrupted.
- Ensure you have a standard telephone handset or charged mobile phone to use when electric-powered phones are un-usable.
